I usually can find Fuyu persimmons at the local Safeway here in canada. Also try those yellow (pear apples) or Nashi. I have usually only eaten kaki(persimmon) and nashi during Fall--but have had salted, dried persimmons for Shogatsu (New Years)

We've had Fuyus in the supermarkets for about a month, Hachiyas for about two weeks and both will be available until around New Year's. However, both types of persimmons grow well in my area (inland southern California) and Fuyus are grown commercially within 30 miles of here. On a side note, I was in France in late December a few years ago and saw Fuyu persimmons at a greengrocers; I was told that they were from Israel and that the fruit's name was "fuyu kaki" which the grocer had no idea was Japanese.

As for the Fuyu...the skin is a little tough but I just eat them like an apple, skin and all! I just don't eat the little nub at the bottom and the leafy part at the top. You can eat them even when theyr'e a little crunchy. yum!

It's persimmon season in Japan, at least where I was in early November. We saw a lot being eaten by crows, and at a park in Osaka we saw some older folks who had come to gather them from one of the big trees. Also, here's a picture of me waiting to buy a street yam! (Hint: I am the blond one.) www.flickr.com/photos/erink/3085782708/The Japan photosets are still a work in progress, but feel free to poke around them. There are a few references to persimmons, though I know there's at least one more I haven't uploaded yet.

The yams smelled so good on the cold, windy days when I was in Japan last year. Unfortunately, I'm allergic to them, so all I could do was take a deep breath and walk on.
