I had a feeling there would have been some sort of joinery used. The dovetail being pretty universal.
Ishiyama-dono, if you feel the joint wouldn't hold (due to travelling abuse) you could hide a pin vertically through the tails and pins of the joint. Dovetail joints are inherently strong due to the way it's made. That's why it's still used on high end cabinetry.
