11/04/09 Grey marbled morning Retreats before the noon sun Into the high hills. Ever-fickle autumn plays Her tricks again and again.

Though only the weeds of the northern capital may now remember, Ancient rivers still inspire The new poets of today.

The best modern thing Is being whom you want to: A woman warrior, A gentleman gardener We can now just be human.

Ramparts of dark clouds Advance upon the east hills With desperate speed. Is that pounding rain I hear Or is it all in my head?

Yuki-onna's touch Withers the garden's beauty. Steaming, frothy jade Will protect my heart from her. Will it also save my soul?

Clouds race and tumble, Yet for all that, it seems Such a timid rain. Mist would be more aggressive Than this pathetic dripping!

Quickly scribbled words Hastily find the paper Where they settle down To what literary hell Shall such doggerel descend?
Comment: I'm never pleased with the stuff I find myself overly rushing to get out.

Good friends, together Like Liu Bei and his brothers Feast and make ready, Who knows whether tomorrow Will bring glory or defeat? Comment: Nothing like making armor and weapons with friends the day before fighting.

Light the brazier soon And fetch some of the heavy quilts. Persimmon sun sets And I am distracted by Trivial knowledge of the world.

Three kites, a basket, A charming tanuki and Onigiri molds. A thirty dollar spree nets Much at the 100 yen store.
(The poem was too short to list the bamboo strainer or the four tenugui....)

Five, seven, and Five The first phrase is often whole-- A single triplet; And yet what is it without That seven seven couplet?

11/8/09 The morning threatens Escape from my control as I gaze to the east. Masts rise from the marina And trees blaze upon the hills.

Summer's warm embrace Lingers on bittersweetly For one final hug. How pretty her bright robes swish To wipe away gloom with thoughts.
Hehehe... It was 60 degrees. In Wisconsin. In November!

The sweet taste of sake with friends as warm as the fire Are enough to tempt Any one to stay out too late And lie about how much one drank...
