In 1869, John Schnell brought 22 Japanese settlers to northern California to form the Wakamatsu Tea and Silk Colony.

I found out about this obliquely when I caught a headline on the SF Chronicle's website saying that Democratic Senator Barbara Boxer and conservative Republican Congressman Tom McClintock had joined forces to get Wakamatsu recognized by the National Register of Historic Places.

Boxer introduced legislation back in August to authorize acquisition of the site by the Bureau of Land Management.

The property is approximately an hour northeast of Sacramento, CA. I may have to think about a road trip out that way this spring....
