If we are a minority, then let us start to beat some serious ass. I friend of mine has agreed to use sword and shield whilst i practice single sword. he knows what he is doing. I say we get a little gung-ho and make them recognize us. maybe this is nothing but a mere pipe-dream, but if it is, let me never wake up. The Samurai is THE best. I shall let no man tell me otherwise. also, maybe I am for reals crazy. For whatever this is worth - I don't like shields, rarely use them and am puzzled by people thinking themselves at a disadvantage facing a shieldman while armed with a glave, greatsword, or other two handed weapon. Apply yourself diligently, practice honestly (ie blame losses on yourself, not your weapon form), and study your opponents as you would anything else important. I have a european persona within the SCA, am a member of Clan Yama Kaminari, and will own up to introducing Daimyo Akira to the SCA while we were both in University. Norumanjin (AKA Mordreth Mjothvitner, KSCA, Tygers Combattant, & some other stuff) addendum - I refuse to accept the SCA thing about "arm hunting" As part of your study of your opponents you might want to notice how freqently limbs come out of the "plane of defense" created by a shield and target accordingly. Once shieldmen lose the advantage of being able to strike forward of their shield they lose a good amount of their advantage YMMV

At 30year, there was an impromptu great sword tourny. It included a gentleman from the east (not nihonjim) that wore ducal leaves and said that he had won his crown with a great sword. From all of these fighters from the known world... I won. I don't suck with great weapons.
However, I'm not the bodytype that is conducive to getting around shields with a great weapon. I have seen the guys who are good at it and I can't pull off their techniques. I still beat them when I fight them great weapon to my nodachi.
So I fight with a sword and sheild quite a bit. I have gone to inter kingdom events for years and fight at a much higher level than most. Have I been king? No...but I live in Antir. It ain't an easy thing to do here. I'm not saying it's easy anywhere else, but it's a kingdom of Tourney fighters, (no real war bands) and the weather only allows for 2 crowns.
Am I a knight? Nope...but there is more to being a knight than just fighting. I don't have the kit, camp, or other non fighting skills. Fighting wise there are many knights that don't want to draw my name in a list. The knights that can beat me regularly are the ones that, at the very least, make the "sweet 16" in the crown lists.
I believe that I represent the fighting Prowess of a Japanese peronae very well. My kit could use some work though.

I'm 5 8 and somewhere around 190 to 205 (depending on how hard I'm training and how good the Guinness is this month ) So I don't know what the "body type" is for greatsword. On the other hand at a Kaminari closed practice I gave a talk and demo with some of my retainers on greatweapons as close quarter terror weapons ( I'm rarely more than two feet from my opponents shield fac, and frequently closer) against a shieldman. The bushi were somewhat apalled by my style. YMMV

There are always new techniques to learn, and being 5'9 and 300 I don't move my feet that well, and am not tall enough to get over the sheilds for the 'rising snap' of most fighters. Sure in a real fight I could smash the sheild aside or bowl them over, but SCA fighting, you know. I have been getting into better shape and there are some "getting around shield" things I have seen and want to try, I just have to go throught the phase of losing alot again to learn them.

I tend to set up on my opponents shield side, very close to their shield and constantly move towards that side during the fight, I'm slightly angled towards their weapon hand, and ruthlessly supress (by striking) any atttempt to move their arm out from the plane of their shield which tends to keep my opponent limited on how he can strike at me. A lot of shieldmen depend on a greatweapon fighter moving backwards away from their perceived threat which gives them a great latitude for striking with a full arm extension. screw up that part of their fight and you've taken away a lot of their "advantage"
I will confess to being squired to Vicount Edward Zifran of Gendy, the Lion of AnTir prior to my elevation to the chivalry. He believed that greatswords confered an unfair advantage on their user in a standard tornrnament fight - which is why he loved the form
