I broke my second gourd as well, so I'm about halfway through the process on making a third one. Clumsy bunny. Wow, April 2013. This project languished for 1 3/ 4 years? Well part of that was procrastination, and part of that was wanting to get good enough at wood turning to make a decent stopper. It has two coats of canning paraffin on the inside, and I got plenty soaked into the cypress stopper. It should be OK if I can keep from dropping it. Third one's the charm, eh? Foreshortening in the photos makes the gourd look small, but it holds about 30 ounces of liquid.

How splendid! The work on the stopper is absolutely gorgeous: very beautifully crafted.
*sigh* The list of "must do" projects just keeps getting longer...

The list of "must do" projects just keeps getting longer. True. I had some year-end vacation time at home and decided to use it to cross off some things that had been on my list for a while. I'm also back to work on Monday, so project work will mostly move to evenings, the weekends in January being entirely filled with SCA "12th Night" events.

I just received a shipment from Wellburn Gourd Farm. www.welburngourdfarm.com/I opted for a baker's dozen of their small "premium" uncut gourds. They're a little more than their standard ones, but that means I don't risk minor blemishes that might turn into leaks or stress points. They arrived this weekend and I was very pleased with what I got. Customer service questions were responded to within 24 hours of my initial email, my order was shipped promptly - and cheaply enough because gourds are lightweight. Sizes are measured by the diameter of the bottom lobe and the small size is fine for a canteen. If you're looking for a source for bottle gourds, check them out.
