Im trying to get the shaft of my new rattan yari to have that glossy black look. Has anyone tried lacquering rattan? Does it hold up to SCA combat?

Never worked with real lacquer, but my father made a "lacquered" yari several years ago. He just used matte black spray paint. It had the right "shiny lacquer" look and stood up pretty well in combat.

you will need to be carefull about what you do to the rattan, there is a rule about modefying the flex in rattan, I would reccomend going black Fiber pole over trying anything with rattan. I would ask you local marshal before trying anything.

Black spray paint is the way to go here. It requires frequent touchups, but it's cheap and easy to do. Any finish you apply is gonna get beaten all to hell in short order. IMHO, best to do something with simple maintenance requirements.

Spearweasel and Kano - you guys rock. I just spray painted the spear and it looks good. Plus it was cheap, easy and instant. Exactly the way I like my women. Maintenance looks easy too. I'll post pics if it winds up THAT good. Thanks!

No. I like my ramen expensive, slow cooked, and complicated. And difficult to make. ;D
