Anyone got any good ideas to wrap sword handles for SCA combat? I did it with electrical tape but it got chewed up the first time out.

Hockey tape should work.
Medical tape would probably work too. Many years ago my father made a nagamaki with three feet of wrapped handle, the medical tape cross-hatched like silk wrappings. It looked very cool and held up okay in combat.

Have you seen Clang Armory's* tsuba? You have to wear gauntlets with 'em of course, unlike the ubiquitous basket hilt, but that seems a small price to pay.
As for pseudo-ito wrap... have you looked at the grip tape used on baseball bats?

i use a base of black hockey tape then i roll said tape into sticky twine by holding a long piece and twirling the roll to spin the tape into a piece of 'twine' i cros hatch wrap it around the grip to match an ito style . then take 70" white wide shoe lace and wrap the entire handle. then take "70" black wide shoelace and do the ito pattern over top meets the 3 ft rule very well and is durable with great grip under your clamshell guantlets.ill take a pic of mine and post it if i can dig it out of my estrella camp gear lol.

I have red electrical tape wrapped exactly like tsukamaki and it lasts just fine... I do try not to block with my tsuka tho!

I wrap mine in white suede and use decorative furniture tacks to hold it on, which are also good for gripping.

This is my first attempt at tsukamaki. THe handle is a trapeziod with a layer of 1/8 " craft foam, a layer of white sports tape and the red ito. For the ito I took the tape and folded it lenthwise by 3. The tsuba is aluminum Attachments:

That looks good to me! I looked at the thumbnail first without reading the text, and didn't realize right away it was rattan!

I know I am late coming into this, but I just got on the forum. I downloaded instuctions from a web site called "Tsuka-maki, The Art of Japanese Sword Restoration" a while back and converted it to a word document. Unfortunately the website is nolonger availabe or I would just put a link to it. I used it, with a few modifications, to wrap the handle of my SCA katana. See the photo below. I will be more than happy to to upload it, but I am not sure how to do it or where to put it.

Silly me. I just realized that, since I have converted the "Tsuka-maki, The Art of Japanese Sword Restoration" web article into a word document I can e-mail it to anyone who would like to have it. Please private message me your e-mail address and I will send it to you.
