Anyone know a website that outlines how period yari were made?
I'm specifically looking at what was wrapped around the shaft where the tang was inserted....

My guess, based on its inclusion as a material elsewhere in Japanese culture, and upon my knowledge of its properties, is that wet rawhide thongs were wrapped around the shaft tightly and then allowed to dry. But that's only a guess.

No web site, but try a innerlibrary loan of Roald Knutsen's books Japanese Spears and Japanese Polearms.

Awesome idea! I just ordered it from the library. I will post pics once I get the "ultimate spear" built!
