Shields weren't really the thing for the Japanese. Excluding that, I would imagine that they did use some types of massed spear tactics, especially in a limited front scenario. Granted, I have nothing to back that claim up however.

Massed spear tactics were commonplace, and even (suprisingly to some) the Japanese used pikes. Oda Nobunaga had his soldiers equipt with pikes almost 9m in length (8.8m).
