Title: The Netsuke of Japan: Legends, history, folklore, and customs Price I paid: $25 Size: 88 pages, but physically large due to all the black and white photos of art included By: Egerton Ryerson Period?: See the review...in short very! At a glance many would assume that a book such as this is not period. How very wrong they are. This book is packed full of the stories and meanings behind classic Japanese symbolism that is then used to create netsuke. I flipped open to a random page in this book and found a short folklore tale about 'Goshisho, a Chinese General' from 500bc! Another random flip I found info on Kagesue (1184ad), Kimi (1100s ad), Saigyo Hoshi (1184 ad), Moritsuna (Heian period), and more. This book is packed FULLLLLLLL of lore and period information of all different kinds: animals, games, public figures, dances, mythology, and more. If you need help researching the period symbolism behind something this is a great book. This book even traces many tales back to their Chinese roots in the BC time frame. Just because it says Netsuke on the cover doesnt mean you should get chased off...as the reference material within is precious.
