I just got back from Treachery at Kyoto, a Japan-themed event in An Tir. It's the only regular Japan-themed SCA event in the kingdom, so I felt obligated to go and support it even though it was a bit of a drive and meant I had to skip a war that was a little closer. I taught a class in the morning about how to not get yourself killed if you got dropped into medieval Japan, as well as the basics you would need to know if you wanted to go native. I fought in the no-shields tournament and won three of seven fights. Hooray! Also, I won the A&S contest... ...by default... ...by forgetting that it was going to happen at all, then just submitting the clothes I was going to wear on Saturday evening anyway, which were a reconstruction of an outfit from the Kyoto Costume Museum that appears in the Mitsuo Kure red book that someone happened to have. I'm not sure whether this makes me lucky, awesome, or both. Overall, the event was quite fun. Lots of people who don't normally do Japanese were wearing thematic clothing, including the baron- who normally does Spartan- in hakama and kosode. Not everyone was doing it with perfect attention to detail, but it was really cool to be in a a part of the SCA world where being Japanese was not anything out of the ordinary. There was a photographer there who took some pictures of me fighting, and he has promised to pass them along to me. When I get them, I will post them. If you find yourself in the area the next time this event happens, I recommend stopping by.

I'm not sure whether this makes me lucky, awesome, or both. I'm going with: lucky to be awesome! I've made it a personal mission of mine to enter more items in A&S displays and competitions. Your win is further encouragement. "They" notice "us" more when we step up!
