I think so, Brain, but we're going to need a bigger hotel. ;D Depends entirely on how long one is in "the neighborhood" and how far one is willing to travel. Britex in San Francisco has a huge selection, but you'll pay full, through-the-nose retail. Fabrix, also in San Francisco had silk taffeta for $9.99 the last time I was there, but they get stuff in and out, so there's no telling what'll be there at any given time. In Berkeley, there's Discount Fabrics and StoneMountain & Daughter. Thai Silks in Los Altos is down in San Jose. They've got a web presence at www.thaisilks.com too.

Speaking of needing a bigger hotel...
I still have a hotel room at this point that only I am in. I have this room for Friday night and Saturday night. I would be happy to split it with someone else if they still need a room at this point. Any takers out there?

Signal boosts have been posted to the West Kingdom list and the West Kingdom group on Facebook. We WILL figure something out.

Bummer, I was near Menlo Park last January and didn't know there was a Thai Silks shop. Though it looks like they only sell a few things I'd be interested in. (By the way, if you're hungry next time you're out that way I highly recommend Calafia in Palo Alto and Kabul in Redwood City.) For what it's worth, Ishiyama-san, his lady Hara, and I are planning some Nipponophile/SCA-geek-y activities the week before the event, including hitting the Takara Sake tasting room, Soko Hardware, and a few other places. Let us know if any of you want to tag along or have suggestions for more itinerary items*. And restaurants. (I'm hoping to get some good ramen at least.) We will be staying down in San Francisco proper** until about Friday morning, but Berkeley is in commute range. This will by no means be referred to as the Saionji Stalker Tour 2012. * My beau and I will also be making at least one trip to the Pacific Pinball Museum in Alameda, which is quite cool if you're into that sort of thing. And suitable for noncombatants if they get bored of being dragged to sake shops and such. ** Is there a useful name for that? I know there's "east Bay" and "the peninsula" but isn't "the peninsula" usually the stuff to the south?

Well, Abe-hime and I are flying out Thursday night, getting in about 9pm to SFO and so we'll be heading straight to the hotel at this point. We look forward to seeing everyone!

** Is there a useful name for that? I know there's "east Bay" and "the peninsula" but isn't "the peninsula" usually the stuff to the south? Bay Area geographical jargon: Marin County is "the north bay." You cross the Golden Gate to get to the North Bay from SF. San Francisco is "The City." It gets its own capitals. Nobody else does. They're implied in the way people say it. It's tiny. South San Francisco (a city of its own) is not included in the area covered. South San Francisco (San Mateo County) down to Palo Alto (just into Santa Clara County) is "the peninsula." It's pretty big. It includes both the bay and coastal communities. You drive down US 101 or I-280 (the most beautiful freeway in America) to get to the Peninsula. Or Highway 1 on the coast. Mythbusters is headquartered in South San Francisco. Santa Clara county is "the south bay." That's Mountain View, Sunnyvale, Santa Clara, San Jose, Milpitas, Cupertino, Saratoga, New Almaden, Morgan Hill, Gilroy and Hollister. It's a big area. Further down US 101 and I-280. Of Japanese interest, Ozeki USA is in Hollister. Hakone Gardens is in Saratoga. "Over the hill" is the coastal communities on the peninsula and Santa Cruz county. At least from the bay-side San Mateo and south bay perspective. I don't know if the San Mateo county coastal communities consider themselves "peninsula" or not. Santa Cruz is just Santa Cruz. There are ruins of WWII-era gun emplacements near Devil's Slide (just south of Pacifica on the San Mateo County coast) built to defend against the Imperial Navy. Alameda County and Contra Costa County are "the east bay." Fremont, Hayward, San Leandro, Oakland, Berkeley, Richmond, and all the stuff out towards Livermore. It's an even bigger area. You cross the Bay Bridge to get to the East Bay from San Francisco. You cross the San Mateo or Dumbarton Bridge to get to the east bay from the Peninsula. It's where Mythbusters blows small to mid-sized things up (and sent the cannonball careening out of the Alameda County bomb range). Alameda itself? It's where the nuclear wessels are. It's sometimes referred to as "the island" to differentiate between it and Alameda County (of which it's a part). Of general interest, one of the oldest and best small distillers is on the island. It's where Mythbusters crashes things on the "abandoned airstrip." The other side of the cyclone fence from the distillery.

I saw this movie again recently and found the twinkie marine biologist annoying and unscientific in the extreme.) We do, however, have an aircraft carrier! www.uss-hornet.org/

For out of towners contemplating mass transit options to get around, be sure to have a look at 511.org/. BART www.bart.gov/ connects Oakland and San Francisco airports to the Concord BART station and the hotel purportedly offers a free shuttle to and from the BART station.

I have no control over what the original poster was copying from and I have no clue what hotel catering is like, but it's an option for those who aren't packing a lunch or don't want to run offsite. (Looks longingly at the map showing a Ranch 99 market only 1.6 miles away....)

The House of Cheerful Monkeys wishes to return the hospitality of the people of the West and invites all to view the Winter Moon Upon The Snow. At the order of their Dread and Barbaric Majesties, Saionji no Hana has been contemplating elevation to the Order of the Laurel for four lunar cycles. If she's not ready by now, she'll never be!
Come celebrate, enjoy the delights of Nihon, meet some of Saionji-hime's out-of-kingdom visitors, make an offering upon the wishing tree. Friday night, January 6, 8 PM, room number to be announced.
(Break's over, Monkeys! Back to sewing.)
