There are styles of kosode from the Momoyama period that look like the patchwork style, but are produced using dye work. These mock patchwork styles are very pretty and are achieved with dye. I have not seen many in this style, but they do exist and are out there as a costume option. The below example is from the Toyko National Museum - a Noh costume from the Momoyama period.
