Title: Ikebana - A practical and philosophical guide to Japanese flower arrangement Year Published: 1984 ISBN: 0-87951-204-0 Language: all English Pages: 176 Periods: Nara to modern, heavy focus on construction and how-to Subjects: How-to do modern Japanese Flower arranging from the Sogetsu School ( you can find them online at www.sogetsu.or.jp/e/ ). There are over 99 color photos, and 37 black and white illustrations in this book that demonstrate how-to and concepts. The techniques demonstrated are pretty old, and most would pass as period or help you achieve period looks. My thoughts: Ikebana is the artful meditation of arranging flowers. In the 11th century of Japan the Shogun Yorimoto (a follower of Zen) embraced this art and fostered its spread. At the time it was expected for Samurai and men of high standing to engage and practice Ikebana. with the rise of tea ceremony it was only a matter of time before these 2 arts crossed paths and sooner were flourishing alongside one another. This book provides a nice beginners intro into the history of Ikebana without being intimidating. Most of the book is about how to actually shape, structure, and create fixtures. In short, this is mostly a how-to book. Photos: No photos of the book, instead you can visit their online site to see several finished modern Ikebana www.sogetsu.or.jp/e/ . I might post photos later, but it seems I have misplaced my camera...
