Well folks, after a broken wrist from heavy fighting and a bit of a promotion at work (thus more work less play)... I got some katana blades from Darkwood armoury, approved for both rapier and cut& thrust play... I got 3 sizes Nodachi - 35" blade Daito - 30" blade Shoto - 25" blade each has a tsuka of 13-14" I put handles on and did the tsukamaki myself I am super happy with these, the balance and weight is superb and very much similar to live blades I also have

WANT.
No seriously. My shire is trying to get some Cut & Thrust going, but unfortunately finances are tight. I still need to buy a new helm for heavy before I can think about buying a sword and mask for C&T.

Beautimus. Exactly the plan I have also. I found the Darkwood blade awhile back, but haven't been able to get one yet. I didn't know they offered the different size blades. I will have to check that out. Really opens up the possibilities. I also plan to make my own tsuba, tsuka and do the tsukamaki. I will have to get the rest of the furniture somewhere else though. ......Unless, yeah........I can get my OCD metalworking friend to "teach" me how to make them, which means he will end up doing most of the work. Yeah.......got to start working on that.......

I am the 2nd person C&T authorised here in Queensland Australia and I am trying to help encourage others to play.
Scott at Darkwood was really helpful... I asked for the three specific lengths and he did the rest I was going to be picky and ask for specific blade curvature, but I am so glad I didnt... they are just perfect
The habaki are steel and welded on The mekugi holes worked out to be in good spots and just the right size for bamboo chopsticks mekugi pins Even the back edge of the katanas are shaped properly except for the 10 inches or so at the tip end where most of the flex is
The furniture was bought at a local sword shop where I have spent way too much money! Matching tsunami motif tsuba, menuki and kashira
As for the tsuka ito - it is leather - I had to get it specialy cut to the width I wanted... the tsuka are almost as expensive as the swords! But dang I do think they look good!

Forgive my ignorance; I fight heavy, not rapier or cut/thrust. But in my observations of the guys on the other side of the practice field, I seem to recall that they have thrusting tips on their weapons. What are you doing in that regard with these? ... or do you have to?

For those weapons with tips that dont accommodate rubber blunts we use a "leather sock" essentially it is a piece of thick leather (qtr inch belt leather works well) that gets folded over the tip and taped solidly in place
Works fine

*Drool* I did see someone using one of those darkwood blades at Great Western War and I LOVED it! The modifications to it are GORGEOUS! I'm glad there has been such good reviews about them! I'll have to invest in some ASAP especially if I'm going to be going into cut & thrust. Thanks for sharing!

I sense a tsunami of Japanese Cut & Thrust is about to occur. Watch out nanbanjin here we come. Banzai! Banzai! Banzai!
Kevin Ok, so it's cheesy, and I used a English-Japanese dictionary, but the sentiment is real.

Cool sword I've been meaning to mount my own blade but i haven't got around to it. After discussing the mounting with fellow fencers I came to the decision I want to extend the tang and prerhaps shape the tang to be curved not only on the blade side as to allow me to make a curved tsuka. Problem is, I would need to get access to welding equipment . The rayskin, tsuba and silk wrap that I ordered from germany have been lying around for almost a year now >.<

I'll admit to being the combat n00b here. Cut and thrust? I'm not even sure my barony *has* that. Someone want to explain to me how it works/compares to heavy list and rapier? ^_^;

Cut and thrust is rapier with percussive hits. It is usually a separate authorization.

It is indeed a separate authorization, in some kingdoms it is also only allowed to be practiced by already authorized Marshalls.

Arigatou gozaimasu. I will ask around at archery practice today and see if it's something we do. I've been trying to figure a way into the melee combat arts that won't break my bank. ^_^; (In the modern world, I play roller hockey, and my goalie equipment chews up most of the money I have for such things.)
