So, I was chatting with Mercy the Potter, AKA Asakura no Mashi, who will be merchanting at West Kingdom Twelfth Night and suggested she might want to bring some of her more Japanese products to merchant as there will be a small but significant Asian presence this year. She asked, "What should I make?" Her raku pieces are lovely, but not food safe. She can, however, work in the Oribe, Ohata and Shino styles. Her prices are also extremely reasonable. I have a tea bowl of hers and it's one of my favorites. What would you like? What might you be likely to buy? Plates? Tea bowls? Sake cups and bottles? www.rakurakutei.com/Let me know so I can pass the word to Asakura-hime.

I could go for some sake serving ware that was less obviously modern. I dropped and broke my previous set that looked nice and old. I would also be excited about a tea bowl.
Thank you for alerting us to this!

I made the happy mistake of admiring aloud the sake flask at October Crown as I am partial to Oribe pottery and this reminded me of it. One of my friends promptly made it disappear from Mercy's booth and it reappeared at Twelfth Night. So, in fact, did Mercy, with five cups made to match it. If you're looking for something special, I'm sure she would happy to accept a commission. This abstract raku piece was also presented to me as a gift and the photo does not do the iridescent glaze justice.

Do you know if she is willing to ship long distances? I live in the midwest, and would be highly interested in some new cups.

Ran into the lovely Asakura-hime this weekend (and plied her with kasutera). She had a couple of pieces in a Shino ware style with her, including a very nice tea jar, and said she's planning on trying some calligraphy accessories (ink stones, water droppers, etc.).
Keep her in mind if you're looking for ceramics in Japanese styles. She can probably make you anything you want, her prices are extremely reasonable and I'm sure you can arrange shipping.
