Looks good, Ishiyama-dono. I'm contemplating a "futon cover" at the moment. Maybe I should just dig out some of my old stencils....

Funny that both of us have reason to bump this thread... After incinerating the previous hitatare intended to go with the green hakama (be careful with the height of flash dryer units when attempting to dry very large garments you just screen printed!), I decided to try again--this time with fabric paint instead of screen printing as a study for the Genji cloud camouflage outfit I want to do. Current status: Green hitatare with gold stripe, paint drying by tomlapille, on Flickr Depending on how these stripes turn out, I may do a similarly-sized one in the same spot on the back. Once the stripes are done, all I have left is to connect the sleeves, finish the sleeve seams, and add sleeve and chest ties.

Looks great! One difference I've found between "surface painting" like this and screen printing is that that the squeegee in screen printing forces enough paint into the fabric that the color gets really deep. With surface painting, I tend to do two coats of paint to deepen the colors. This covers up the texture of the fabric, though. Another method I've seen used for striping is that used on Obata Kenjirou Torashi's garments on the Samurai Eye page. I got chance to see one of those garments close up a couple of Pennsics ago, and the stripes are ribbon that has been sewn down securely. It seems to work well.

Four's unlucky, Ishida-dono. (; Three or five? (Four = shi, which sounds like death, also shi.)

That is an excellent point! Four is out. We will see what I decide to do tonight.

Sharp!
I'm planning my own green linen hitatare kamishimo, and I hadn't really thought about decorating it, but I guess I should.

Thank you!
The things I make look so plain to me now when they aren't decorated or patterned in some way. Now that I know fabric paint is this easy, I think I'll be doing this for the forseeable future.

Oh, that is wonderful-looking! Hope to see pictures of you wearing it. Love the colors together.

That is indeed my next step, actually. I'll be doing the Genji cloud camouflage kamishimo on silk twill, and that'll be stenciled.

You need an OSHA orange kosode to wear with it. ;-D

The hilarious thing about that is that a Sengoku samurai would likely see such a thing, say "ooh, shiny!", and naively wear it.
