www.press.uillinois.edu/books/catalog/58gbc6aa9780252035630.htmlThis collection of articles, edited by Eric Rath (author of Food and Fantasy in Early Modern Japan) and Stephanie Assman, mostly deals with post-period subjects. Dr. Rath's article on honzen dining contains information covered in greater depth in Food and Fantasy. However, articles on early Edo period kaiseki tea meals, views on meat consumption and the development of tastes for European wines were certainly interesting. The "modern" articles are a true eye-opener as to just how much of what we think of as Japanese food wasn't eaten in period (at least, not by the Japanese). From bento as "boxed love" to relatively recent trends involving heirloom vegetables and slow food, this collection is definitely for the food lover.
