i thought about posting on the vendor thread but as i am not a vendor maybe put it here as i am an aspiring vendor lol. my lady and i are thinking of vendoring and have been puting our feelers out to find what people forget when they go to an event and have to go to the store and get it . i have a pretty good list of mundanes but what about asian persona type people? what is it that you forget and would like to see at a booth or what would you like to see just shopping? some of the things i have forgotten or needed were things like cheap sake cups or sets, kumihimo braids, silk ties , tabi socks, chop sticks and such . a big one for me is asian hats they always seem to have the same coffee funnel hats and never any really interesting hats. what do you guys think? what would you like to see?

The things everybody seems to want and barely anybody seems to carry are proper hats (as you mention), eboshi, zori, and geta. Affordable prices might be difficult on some of those unless you're making them yourself.
Having a good footwear vendor would be awesome. Even if you remember to pack everything, footwear failures are common, and immediate replacement is necessary.
There's one vendor at Pennsic with a selection of Japanese garb. Some of it uses gorgeous fabric, but very little of it follows historical patterns. Another vendor has started carrying stoneware like sake sets, teapots, and bowls. They've done it for a few years now so I guess it sells well.

i havent found a good source for geta so i may look at making them myself . i have done alot of looking and they are very expensive. i may even get a jig for waragi and do those to order. i will also be on the look out for anyone wishing to sell their items with me. i have done this before very successfully as i dont do consignment i buy directly from you and sell it. saves a hassle so let me know if anyone is interested. especially since you can make what you havent seen in the past for people in the future lol.

Parasols and fans also, perhaps? I haven't been to a war event yet, and I don't know how often they're sold, but that strikes me as something that's easy to forget. I would definitely buy hats if they were available. I haven't been able to find any locally and don't really want to order online.

Parasols and fans also, perhaps? Yeah, but then you need a retainer to hold the parasol over your head. (Seriously. I have yet to find a period image of anyone holding their own parasol and suspect that personal ones are an Edo period development). Parasols and fans of various kinds do turn up with other merchants. Now, if you could find some proper Japanese sensu to merchant, those would be cool. That said, I admit to being terribly spoiled.lucky to live where I do. If anyone is looking for anything in particular (cheap feast ware is pretty easy!) I may be able to find it and get it to you at whatever it costs me plus shipping.

hey maybe i could rent out buffy beefcake retainers to go along with the parasols lol!! what we were planning on is having a selection of good parasols and really good high end sensu . all the ones i have seen at events were the cheap ones and flimsy umbrellas . and guarranty that it is a one of a kind for that event . we wont sell duplicate patterns or colors. i havent found a good warehouser for hats tho so may end up making them.

Most places that bother to carry them, they are $45 to $60 a pair, for some reason. Every once in a while, though, you see a store with them for $15 to $20 a pair. Making the wood part is pretty easy, but attaching and fitting the hanao (straps) is something of an art form.

These are things I would love to see personally-
Any sort of Japanese cookbooks I think would be really cool, footwear as mentioned above, and lots of hats. I'll send you a PM with a link to a fairly good waraji tutorial. On hanao one solution would be making them the straps pretty much premade to a certain length- I also have a tutorial for attaching them) you shouldn't have too much of a problem I would think. Also- what I would like to see someday would be warmer clothing (I know just layer your robes but still) kappas/kappos, lined kosodes, warm hats/wimples(?) and definitely warm tabi. Chopsticks and foodware are a definite bonus point too. I hope that within the next year or two I can have a gourd or gourd shaped drinking vessel. I know- crazy. That's my input Lash-dono.

TI hope that within the next year or two I can have a gourd or gourd shaped drinking vessel. Some of our board members have painted old Pom bottles and used them as suito. If you want to try making your own suito, you can buy gourds here: www.caning.com/

Whoops. I stand corrected, now that the Tokyo National Museum has fixed the links to the Ippen Shonin Eden picture scroll. www.tnm.jp/uploads/r_collection/LL_C0047689.jpg shows a monk at the far left in white with what looks like a personal wagasa (parasol). Up and from the right of him standing in front of an ox cart is a man in grey and white hitatare with a retainer holding a parasol over his head.

I also want to try making gourd canteens, but in terms of need-it-quick, that's a great idea. (: Hadn't even considered it. Thanks for sharing!

When I was at Gulf War, I could not find a good fan to save my life, that is definitely something I would look for.

maybe i could make my habita silk under clothes for sale for warm clothes? i made a hakama and kosode and have wore them in -10 deg and was toasty. fans are a must but i want to sell good ones. gourds sound fun i havent thought of that what i did think of was the 3 inch bamboo canteens i dont know what you call them but they are one section of a 11 inch piece of bamboo with a hole cut in the top and stoppered.
