I know other areas in the SCA can be a little stainless crazy, but does anybody use stainless steel for tsubas?

I saw your photo stream in the other thread and honestly for a cheap Tsuba a washer doesn't look half bad.

Did you guys notice that "washer" is four inches in diameter and half an inch thick?

Yup. It better be, it's $77. I think that is perfect for a round Tsuba blank, just really expensive. If you really wanted stainless though it may be the best way to go.

The stainless washer is a recent discovery and (I assume) would be both finished and rounded on the sides. The picture you found is the $10 mild steel tsuba I designed and had custom laser cut. To keep costs down this "basic" tsuba is not finished - you can see the laser marks on the side. On the plus side, with the non-round center hole it doesn't spin like a round washer can. In the tsuba section at foxknife.com, I also have a $1 round 3" galvanized washer, 1/8" thick. At the other end of the spectrum, I have perfectly smooth water-cut tsubas that are both more intricate and more expensive.

The chrysanthemum tsuba started life as a 1/2" thick sheet of aluminum.
