www.mitoku.com/products/umeboshi/healthbenefits.htmlsushi-master.com/usa/whatis/history.htmlAccording to these web sites, Onigiri is not only period, but came from the same source as sushi. Well, as close to period as most of the modern world feels safe with. I am all for warping rice around a filling, but letting my rice and fish rot for a while before I eat them is a bit much. On the other hand, for the brave, umeboshi IS known as a period food poisoning remedy.....

I believe we've run across onigiri as period items in the past, but I don't recall where. Regardless, wrapping rice around items to preserve them was known, as you indicated regarding the sushi, and I could definitely see that as the origin of this particular food item.
No need to be down on rotting things, though--controlled rotting is one of the primary food preparation techniques: soy, miso, yogurt, cheese, aged meat, beer, garum, kimchi, nampla, vinegar, lutefisk, early ketchup, etc.
