I just finished up a new karabitsu. This one was a bit of a serious A&S project. I didn't use any power tools at all. It's all pull saws, planes, gimlets, chisels, and abrasives. It's 99% cypress and 1% glue with no metal fasteners. I used a dowel plate to make the wooden pegs from scrap cypress. I am very proud of myself, even though I cursed my decision to be a stickler about no power tools every time I picked up that stupid gimlet to drill another hole. The joinery isn't perfect, especially on the legs, but as we say in camp, "CROSE ENUFF!"

Sometimes this forum needs a "Like" button.

I agree, a "Like" button would be great.

Are the corners dovetailed? Or is that the 1% glue?

Are the corners dovetailed? Or is that the 1% glue? They're not dovetailed. I decided to not push my luck too much. I'm not quite sure what to call this kind of corner joint, although it seems very common. It's basically a box joint with very wide fingers. There's a little bit of glue at every joint, but most of the glue is at the joins between legs and carcasse. It turns out that some cuts that are easy when using a band saw are difficult and laborious when using a hand saw and chisels.

I entered this karabitsu in the competition at the 12th Night celebration of my local Barony, the Barony Marche of the Debatable Lands. Despite some stiff competition, I won, and was consequently named Baronial A+S Champion! Lots of compliments from the populace, too.

Nicely done, and major omedetô all around. What are the dimensions of that puppy?

What are the dimensions of that puppy? The inside is roughly 18.75"x10.875"x10.5", so about 1.25 cubic feet of volume. The dimensions were more or less dictated by the dimensions of the lumber I was using. The carcase is made from cypress 1by12. The walls are one board width high, the floor of the box is one board width wide, and the lid is two board widths long. Everything else is based on those measurements. To make it any larger, I'd have to do some funky piecing.
