One of the organizers of the event posted this on another forum, and has allowed me to repost here:
Kennesaw State University, located a little to the North East of Atlanta, Georgia, is in the process of setting up a couple of lectures by the famous Japanese Military Historian Stephen R Turnbull as part of the University's Year of Japan activities in 2013. Dr. Turnbull is the renowned author of dozens of books and publications on Samurai and Asian Military History as well as a major consultant on video games such as various editions of Shogun Total War. Currently Dr. Turnbull has been working as a consultant on a new Hollywood movie about the 47 Ronin.
As part of the Year of Japan, KSU is bring in speakers and hosting special events all year that will focus on Japanese culture, art and history. Dr. Turnbull has tentatively agreed to the lectures barring any unforeseen events. While all the details of these specific even are still being worked out, the current plan is to have two free lectures, open to the public, during mid to late October 2013 on the KSU campus. Normally one lecture would be held during the day, usually at noon, and then one in the evening (possibly different days). Both lectures would cover different topics, with the noon lecture focusing on a more traditional look at Japan, Samurai and World History, while the evening lecture would focus on Dr. Turnbull's most recent research into Samurai working as Mercenaries in both South East Asia and Europe during the late Sengoku and early Tokugawa era (from what was explained to me). While the University and Year of Japan staff are working on this project, I wanted to reach out to the public to determine how much interest there are in the two lectures to try and identify what facility should be used to hold the event and to determine if both even should possibly be held at night allowing more people a chance to attend. If you are seriously interested in attending one or both of these lectures, I would very much like to hear from you so that we can develop a better understanding of public interest that can be presented back to the Year of Japan staff and faculty to help them decide best how to handle the events. An email address has been set up specifically to collect information from those interested in the various Year of Japan events so we can determine interest levels and also to allow us to build a distribution list to be able to send information to interested parties as it becomes available.
If you are interested, please provide as much of the information listed below to the indicated email address and we will add you to our list of people to contact with further information as it becomes available.
