This year's "Night on the Town", in Lochmere, Atlantia, will see a Japanese theme thanks to Lord Sanada Terasu, who is making sure that there is plenty of Japanese-themed rapier combat. This is Atlantia's premiere rapier event, and I've never heard anything but good reviews of the fighting. The following is the description from his post about the fighting on Facebook:
NOTE: The "Academie d'Espee" is Atlantia's fencing guild
In a Japanese themed style, I like to call the rapier events: Night on the Machi. Four powerful Samurai Clans of the Sengoku period gather on the fields of battle to prove who has the mightiest warriors. The Oda, the Tokugawa, the Takeda, and the Uesugi. The Oda and the Tokugawa, long allies form together as an allied front while the long rivals, Takeda and Uesugi join together to defeat the Oda-Tokugawa alliance before deciding which of the two clans is destined to rule Japan. But in the end, they all know, alliances are always temporary.
The day will proceed as follows (Times are an estimate as I expect things to take longer than they are listed):
9:00 am Authorizations/Inspections
9:30 am Speed Blacksword Tourney
10:00 am Melee of the Bushi (Winning alliances gets 2 point each)
In this melee, the two alliances will challenge each other using strategy and skill, to gain an advantage before all out war begins. Each member will have a point value assigned to them by what scarf, or equivalent, they hold within the Acedemy d'Espee.
Scholar: 1point, Free Scholar: 2points, Provost: 3points. Fighters without a scarf shall be assigned according to their skill level. Each Team will have 10 points that can be fielded at one time. The other team will field the same amount of points, but in any variable to equal that of the other team. If they cannot equal that of the other team, they must reach the closest number without exceeding that of the other team. Each team member can only be used once until all of their people have been used before being used again. If you die during a melee, you are removed from the team until the Woods Battle. The winner is decided by eliminating the other team or by your team having a higher point value than the other team after 45 minutes.
11:00 am All Out War (Winning alliance gets 2 points each)
All out war has broken out in the woods between the allied clans. Prove your worth to your Daimyo's in this great battle. A three flag woods battle with 5 random time checks. Unlimited Resurrections. The alliance who holds the most flags at the end of the battle wins.
12:00 pm Lunch
12:30 pm The Rise of the Shogun (Winning Alliance gets 2 points each)
The Feuding has come to a high as both Alliances has declared a Shogun to rule over the military of Japan. Both still without the Emperor's consent, war erupts once more as each alliance attempts to pass along the road to Kyoto to reach the Emperor before the other. In this scenario, each team will assign a Shogun and attempt to reach the other side of the field before their Shogun can be killed. No Resurrections.
1:00 pm Every Daimyo for himself. (Winning Clan gets 2 points)
The alliances now broken over who will be Shogun, each Clan joins the battle field to claim the right to call themselves the strongest. In this scenario, the alliances are separated into their respected clans to fight a four way melee. No resurrections.
1:30 pm To stand above the Rest. (Winning Clan gets 4 points)
To end the war, the Emperor has decreed that each clan is to send their strongest Bushi to compete in a grand melee for his enjoyment. Each fighter will fight for his Clan, but ultimately, it's every man for himself. Will they band together to take down their rivals or will they go it alone to prove their might? A Grand Melee, no Resurrections.
2:00 pm Cut and Thrust Tournament. Open Field for Pickups.
There will be a Cut and Thrust Tournament at the end of the day. The rules are best 2 out of 3, double elimination. There will be a prize for this tournament, a nice hand crafted brown leather belt pouch. The rest of the field will be open for pick-ups and any other training the fighters wish to do. If there is time, we may also do a two handed Cut and Thrust Tournament for those who are interested.
