Greetings from Solveig! Here is a shameless plug for my Pennsic classes:
FRI (8/1) 1:00-3:00 PM (Æthelmearc 1) Taking the Brush: Japanese Calligraphy A hands-on introduction to designing and executing Japanese official documents. This class will introduce the role of the scribe in imperial and military government. Participants will also learn about the evolution of character styles and how documents were attested. Please bring large bamboo writing brushes and paper weights if you have them.
SAT (8/2) 1:00-3:00 PM (Kaminari E03) Leaves of Laughter: Comic Theatre Workshop A participatory workshop introducing late-medieval improvisational Japanese comic theatre. Participants will be introduced to stock characters, theatrical devices, and comic theory. We will read several play synopses and script a short play for performance later in the week.
SUN (8/3) 1:00-2:00 (Kaminari E03) Gishiki: Court and Polity in Medieval Japan A discussion of court procedure, rank, title, and office. An introduction to Japanese etiquette. Includes a beginner's guide to Japanese governance.
MON (8/4) 1:00-2:00 PM (Kaminari E03) Sado Nyumon: Introduction to the Tea Ceremony An overview and participatory introduction to the Japanese tea ceremony. Includes a basic introduction to the history and theory of the tea ceremony along with a participatory introduction to the basics of performing the role of a guest in a tea ceremony.
TUE (8/5) 1:00-2:00 PM (Kaminari E03) Itamae: Samurai Chef What did Pimiko, Shotoku-taishi, the Shining Genji, Dogen, and Hideyoshi eat? An introduction to the food, food culture, cookery, rituals of the meal, and the culinary calendar of pre-modern Japan.
TUE (8/5) 7:00-9:00 PM (Kaminari E03) Muhekian: The Taste of Tea Enjoy the taste of tea under the night sky. Please wear Japanese or loose-fitting clothing with white socks or tabi, and bring a fan if you have one. Please do not wear any jewelry or weapons in the tea room.
WED (8/6) 1:00-2:00 PM (Kaminari E03) Kamon: Samurai Banners An illustrated introduction to the history, function, aesthetics, and display of Japanese heraldry.
THU (8/7) 1:00-2:00 PM (Kaminari E03) Shukyo: Samurai Religion An introduction to pre-modern Japanese religious and magical beliefs and practices.

FRI (8/8) 1:00-3:00 PM (Kaminari E03) Seeds in the Heart: Writing Japanese Poetry A participatory exploration of Japanese poetics. Includes Japanese poetry from the early classical period to the development of tanka, haikai, hokku, and renga. We will consider both formal poetic forms and less formal poetry. Learn about the role of kigo, kiriji, and makurakotoba. Participants will have an opportunity to experiment with creating their own poetry. Please bring writing materials.

A picture from the Pennsic 43 Known World Arts & Sciences display, from Mistress Rowena's photobucket- Atlantia's Godai Katsunaga displays 1) Period Japanese arrows - war arrows made in the style of period arrows, some containing antique arrow heads. 2) Japanese quiver (Ebira) - War quiver. 3) Japanese arrow toss game.
