Her gaze arrests mine Amid the glowing ranks of Kannon-bosatsu. Guardian, general, she Watches even as she prays. Photography was not permitted in the interior of Sanjusangendo Temple, but the female bodhisattva Mawara-Nyo made a strong impression on me. Outside, a cold day. Autumn has emptied the park. Inside its building Friends, old and new, gather to Celebrate the year's harvest.

Golden leaves shimmer As if lit from within, though The sun hides her face. Gingkos wave at each other Like friends from across the street.

Hurriedly thinking Of a suitable tanka Before it's too late; Heavy eyelids, like vault doors, Threaten to close to quickly.

Each night I sit here, Trying to call to mind a Poetic image. I set the bar high so I May bruise my forehead on it.

The mountain stands tall, Prussian blue and gray against The surrounding hills. Scarlet and orange banners Announce the dawn's arrival.

I woke from a dream in which I had memories of things that maybe happened in another dream or maybe I just dreamed them.

The deep winter cold Sinks its sharp and frozen teeth Through both skin and bone; An early seasonal guest Arrives without a partner.
