Good evening =), Currently I am looking around in Japan to find a nice Samurai eboshi. Not too sucessful so far, so if someone knows about a shop in Kyoto who sells this item pls tell me =). I found those two (online) and both are labeled as Samurai Eboshi. So, except for the material difference, I was wondering if the eboshi in the first picture will end up looking like the one in the second picture. Or is it just a matter of how to fold it? At least the latter one does not look as if you could fold it, but I maybe mistaken. regards, Matsu

I am told ( by which I mean that I have not really tried it myself) that turning a regular eboshi into a samurai eboshi really is just a matter of folding. The first image shows a folded eboshi laid out flat, and the second shows it opened up to fit on a head. Whether the second eboshi has been stiffened (traditionally, that would be done with lacquer) and then shaped, or shaped and then stiffened, I do not know. It may be a matter of stiffening the fabric a bit, folding it like origami, carefully opening it up, then stiffening it more.
