After finishing the front section of my tosei do posterboard-mockup, I realized that it was much too long, reaching from below my waistline almost up to the base of my neck (I'm 5'6", by the way). The mockup consists of lames with a height of 2.5", to resemble boards of iyo zane. Some thinking led me to the conclusion that the overlap was too little, I had been going for the 1/2" that Effingham-sensei mentioned again and again in the Making a Do-chapter. This works well for solid lames with a total height of 2", but with the scale pattern I'm using you end up with an exposed surface of 2". If you have more experience than I do, you'll be able to imagine easily enough that this does not work with a 5 lame-nagagawa do - but this is why you make mockups Now, as the title of the thread implies, I'm wondering if an overlap of 1" is already too much. I've found one or two threads where people said they use as much as 3/4", but to arrive at an exposed surface of 1.5" with my scale pattern (not to mention Effingham plates with a height of 2.75"...), I can't really do less overlap. Is that legit?
