Hi I am new to sca and the personae creation. My family and I plan do go Japanese but I am a little leering of randomly choosing a name with at least find the meaning. I can find the female names ok but having trouble finding the meaning to Kinstune and Toshiie if any one could help with that it would be great. I am also confused with clan names and surnames. I was told that my kids and I would have one surname while my wife would have a clan name. Little confused by the difference. Would that imply different mon as well for her? Any help would be appreciated?

Toshiie (利家), such as Maeda Toshiie, has a literal meaning of "Sharp/Profit" + "House". Though, remember, the two characters may have had other meanings having to do with a connection to another person. For instance, he was the son of Maeda Toshiharu, so "Toshi" was to show the familial connection, no doubt. As for "Kintsune", if it is "近常" then we are talking about "Near" + "Normal/Usual". I'm not sure if that is the correct kanji. I haven't cracked open NCMJ, but that has the meanings as well. -Ii

So Kinstune would essentially mean "nearly normal" implying that I am not? =D

So I have come across two surnames or family names, still not certain about the destinction between the two, that I am not certain meet the period requirements. Anyone know if the names Akiyama or Mifune are period?
Thanks

Akiyama should work. I know a couple who just got that passed and it seems to go back to at least the 14th century if not earlier as a branch of the Takeda family.
Mifune I'm not so sure of. I am not immediately aware of that family in period.

Thank you for your help, we are going to stick with Akiyama and go for Yamada instead of Mifune. We have the forms filled out now to send them in.

Noble Cousin!
Greetings from Solveig! As much as I like the late actor, Mifune 三船 (lit. three boats) is most likely a modern name going back to just the late 19th century when run of the mill Japanese acquired the right to have family names.
