I have recently been thinking of possibly of portraying a Shinto priest but I am not sure if it's considered in bad taste as I am not a Shinto priest. I also don't want to limit myself in terms of combat either although it'll be decades before I can afford armor. Is the priest personae allowable? Is there anyone else that portrays one? Thanks in advance

This is a difficult question to answer, and feelings are likely to be different depending on who you talk to. Is it in poor taste to impersonate a priest? I have wondered about this, as well. For the purpose of performing a reenactment of a ritual, I don't think there would be much of a problem. On the other hand, a lot of this could also be done by portraying an onmyoji, which avoids some of the conflict with modern Jinja Shinto. Also, note that you don't have to have a single "persona" for all purposes. You can portray a priest, one minute, and a warrior the next. For modern Jinja shinto questions, in English, you might want to ask at the Tsubaki Grand Shrine of America. There is also a Shinto contingent represented at the UN, and various shrines in Japan that could help with information, if you wanted. My main recommendation, particularly when dealing with religion, is to make sure you do your homework so that you can be respectful in your portrayal. -Ii

I looked into you suggestion of portraying a onmyouji and found so little information about it I became kind of discouraged. But thank you for your help, all be it a belated thank you.

Noble Cousin! Greetings from Solveig! Thanks in advance There is nothing at all wrong with recreating a Shinto priest. People in the Society have recreated all sorts of religious people including bishops, monks, and nuns without necessarily even being christians. There is a professional magician who recreates a yamabushi. The Society Policy on Religion only prohibits coercing people which includes a ban on scheduling any sort of religious or magical activity as the central activity at an event, conducting it in a central event area, or conducting it in the list field. As with any sort of East Asian recreation, you may encounter opposition or even hostility. My advice is as always to do the best possible job of research based recreation you can.

Some more considerations:
1) There are many types of Shinto out there. A kannushi (priest) might be a priest at an institution, such as Ise Jingu, or they might just be a local priest supported by the local community in what amounts to a hereditary position.
2) The garments used by priests for ritual purposes are generally based on the clothing of the court. A good kariginu and tate-eboshi with sashinuki need not indicate a priest, per se. That gets you into some fabulous clothing, without worrying about the rest--that can be up to you.
