Okay so I am planning to make a suit of armor for SCA combat. Number one- I already have a helmet though it's not a kabuto. Has any one taken a non japanese helmet and made it kabuto like? Images? Process pics? Number two- Has anyone made an old set of greaves look like suneate? Number three- what is the best type of armor to make from the dreaded plastic of smurf color.

First off Try to find a different colored Barrel. If not available You can paint plastic,Then spend lots of time repainting it. I'm doing the same thing. But I acquired a black barrel. I've contacted various suppliers about brown or red Kydex. Problem, most Japanese armour is exposed, so the colour will show.(Make the Body armour then cover with a Gi?) What kind of helm do you have ? Spangen or some sort of round topped helm could work.(I'm a welder and armourer). There is a short cut to help with the layouts a bit, if you're not too artistic. Go on line to "PaperCraftSquare"and look at the samurai helms available.(Downloadable)Print off 1 or 2 and look at the fit /angles/Curves of the helms. You're going to need a tightish fit around the face.Doing something like a zunari works I think. What I'm trying anyway.

I would love to but the white and blue barrels I have fit my budget. FREE! If I could I would just buy some plate and make.out of metal. I realize the up keep involved with painted plastic. It will be good practice for another project not related to topic at hand. Helmet is generic sorta helm. Hope these pics show up.

Hi Again, Couple of questions. What tools and experience do you have? The helm looks like a (Spun top) Bascinet(sort of). You can work with that. You could either cut apart the helm then modify the parts, by Cutting uo the top into 3 pc's, a center band and two sides, (save the Bar grill)re-assemble the top pc's as if you were making a zunari top. then add the layered shikoro pc's then reuse the grill.Easier said than done though.Need a bandsaw,or jig saw, Grinder or file, drill or welding machine, Shears or again jig saw. Electric shears work wonderfully for cutting steel.(PrincessAuto and Harborfreight both carry them) Posterboard for trial layouts of parts. Look up "sengokudaimyo.com" it'll give you a lot of help. with the armour layouts. Might I ask what part of the world you're in? I'm doing the almost exact same thing to make a helm.

I dont believe the top is spun but I haven't had the padding out in awhile lol. I have access to jigsaw, drills, drillpress, people that can weld, grinder, files, and have had experience with all of them. I am a cnc operator/setup/leadperson in daily job. Live in the southwest portion of Michigan. I would very much like to make the bar grill removable as the helmet currently doesn't allow me to wear my glasses and it's getting harder to do stuff without them lol.

I'd be willing to bet a coffee that the top is a spun dome(Too regular in outline.Plus I've worked with and own a couple)The grill looks to be relatively easily removed and could be changed to be hinged. But that adds some problems. Normally the grill fits the helm, not the helm fits the grill. From what I just read a kabuto can be round.using it would save dishing, cost more time doing work to either cover it up or trick the eye.(I've always tried to work with the 10 foot rule.If you can fool the eye at 10 feet it works)Paint the top with lines so it looks like it was made of sections and people will buy it.Add some weld dots where rivets went and they'll really see it. Not too sure what to do with the barrels though. -Coat of plates with a kimono over it?Paint them?Leg armour can be covered by Hakama, Body? As a cnc you should have possibly less problems than I'm having laying out the side lames of the helm.Thought about making a helm shaped like one of the straw hats and wear concealed armour. Too bad you're a little too far away for me to help you directly. (Toronto, Ontario)This is my first samurai armour foray.been making other type for over 15 yrs.

As I said it could be, just seems shorter side to side vs front to back in person anyway. 10ft rule is my goal until I can afford or build a real sca kabuto. I have been reading sengokudaimyio.com. Will probably just end up.doing a coat of plates hidden until things come around to doing metal. Perhaps doing suneate with plastic? Who knows. This is really my first armor adventure.
