To make it easier to have large kumihimo-centric events in North America, the American Kumihimo Society (https://amksoc.org/) was founded about a year or two ago. There was already a Kumihimo Society in Japan, and a Braid Society in the UK, so now we have a place of our very own here in the new world.
We had our first conference this past weekend in Tampa, Florida, and plans are already on for next year's conference at the same hotel. One of the attractions this year was a talk by Makiko Tada on the history and future of kumihimo.
The main attraction for folks here is probably the third conference in 2019, which is being planned for Iga, Japan. Iga is the capital city for traditional kumihimo, so this is exciting. The conference itself will be held at a refurbished school, and numerous side trips and additional tours are being worked on. I think Adrienne Gaskel is alread planning on running one of her fiber and bead tours of Kyoto.
Anyway, if you're interested in a trip to Japan that is not a commercial tour but still organizes you with other English speakers, you now have two years to develop an interest in Kumihimo!
