Hello, all!
I haven't seen any posts about shopping or proxy services, so I would like to recommend the service I use, FromJapan. Proxy services make it easy to buy or bid on items from websites that don't ship overseas. I recently bought an ichime-gasa from Amazon Japan via this service, and it arrived obsessively packed and in perfect condition--an impressive feat, with how oddly-shaped and delicate this kind of hat is. FromJapan even offers a buyer protection plan for an additional 700 yen, giving you some coverage in case your items do somehow arrive damaged or otherwise not what you expected. All you have to do is give them the link to the item you would like, include specifications and pictures, and send them the request. They normally have a quote to you by the following business day.
Payment for the item itself is done up-front, either by credit/debit card or by PayPal. After the item is purchased and arrived at the warehouse, the buyer can choose among several different shipping methods, and once again choose a payment method, in case you wanted to split payment over multiple cards. FromJapan holds items in their warehouse for 45 days and offers bundled shipping, in case you want to buy several things at once and save on costs by having them shipped to you all at once. There are also certain thresholds where, once you have bought enough items through the service, they begin to offer discounted pricing on EMS shipping (I've almost earned a 3% discount! Yay!).
The website itself can be a little awkward to navigate at first, but they have provided a thorough FAQ and series of instructions. If there is anything you've been drooling over but have not been able to purchase without physically being in Japan, this is an excellent resource to consider.
