Okay, we all know that tate were not used like shields in the West. They certainly shouldn't be used like they are being used by some of my enthusiastic but mis-guided clansmen in the 2004/10/17 pictures of the Avalon/ Yoroi-wars bofffer fight at www.bushinavi.com/forum/upl/joyful.cgi(Yes, that's my mon they have on them - please don't kill me, Mr. Bryant! I'm in Sendai! I didn't know what they were doing!) But they were, I think, fought over as barracades. This leads me to (perhaps dangerous) speculation: could they be used as the heavy shields that are often used for bridge battles? As seen at www.flame.org/~explorer/album/19980818/d/05.jpgOf course, they would each require a fighter to carry and to prop them up, which isn't authentic, but is this a truely repugnant idea? I think this could be useful, and not terribly inaccurate if care was taken, for large-ish Japanese groups at wars. Yamamori.
