Omedetou gozaimasu, Raito-dono, and to your lovely lady as well! I may have to cross over the border and pay a visit at some point! (Although, technically, driving to Northshield requires all of five minutes... ) Will your lady also be doing Japanese, or will this be like the last time, where each person did their own persona? (That was a different lady, IIRC? Master Giles' wife?) Ki no Torahime

In reverse order:
Yes, when I was Prince of the Principality of Northshield, my princess was Elashava bas Riva, The wife of Master Giles. The future Queen is AEsa Gilsdottir. And no, while she does have quite the collection of Japanese clothing (she gets all the good stuff), the reign is hers, and we shall dress as she wishes to dress. Her persona is somewhat later Norse, but she likes clothes.
Coronation is in Mare Amethystinum (Thunder Bay, Ontario), on Sept. 10. Looks like I'll need a passport, because I sure as hell ain't going through what I went through the last time I visited Canada. There's also mucho wierdness with getting half the regalia (i.e. pointy things) there and back again. Northshield has already lost stuff at the border in the past. We'll work it out, though.
And, thanks, Hiroda-dono.
The Princess and I are currently in negotiations as to whether or not she will allow me to once again style myself as Kitadate-denka. Now I gotta look up what I should use as King. Maybe whatever the Chinese emperor would bestow...

Maybe it belongs in Heiho, but I did win my one katana bout, and selected spear as my form in all the bouts but a bye, when Baron Adrien, daring great things, chose it first (and beat me fair and square yet!). Afterward, it was commented that I used the same sort of techniques I'd taught the weekend before at Northshield's War College. I did lose one other spear bout, to The Honorable Vladimir Radescu (in the first 2 Crowns, he'd won with katana. This time, I won with katana, and lost with spear. Darned double-ended heresies...)

The Princess don't much care for it. One of the things the Japanese did a lot was to change their names. While the specific construction I use might catch some flak from Indiana, it works well enough for the rest of the SCA who aren't as picky, as see a name change of this sort as really weird. But, having gone through it once, I think Northshield thinks it's kinda cool. And Kitadate (Northshield) is close enough to Kitakaze (same kita, you know). Still working on what to do after Coronation with the name, though.

...Still working on what to do after Coronation with the name, though... Um.... Tenno comes to mind, then again some people might have a problem because it translates (modernly) to Emperor... I'll have to send you the button.

Well, I have a problem being Emperor ;D
Every nihonjin in the SCA come to the problem sooner or later of how to try to reconcile the SCa's ideas of how things are with some sort of period Japanese model (and it's OK, some namban have the same problem to solve). It's not made easier by the fact that most namban consider Japan to be the same throughout our period, and we know that's not so.
So here's Raito's model of how it works:
Northshield is Japan. The Middle used to be Japan, but Northshield split off, so it's Japan. Kind of.
The West is China. Original source of culture now gone decadent.
The BoD is the Imperial Court. Far away, shrouded in mystery, all that. Impractical to deal with on a day to day basis, yet you MUST have an acceptable rank in order to deal with them and get anything done. Who the emperor is is rather irrelevent, because we never see him, and aren't given to using his name.
All the other Kingdoms are little Koreas, scattered about. Sometimes they invade. Sometimes we trade with them.
Naturally, as Raito exists in the late Muomachi, and has great rank (now), he wants to unify Japan, just like all those other daimyo. But the SCA says he can't be Shogun. So what to do?
One possibility is to research what title the Chinese emperor gave the Ashikaga shogun as King of Japan, but that's a bit early for me. Another is to use whatever title would have been used for a foreign king, but I'm not foreign.
Note that my view is quite different than when Tsuneo-dono became 'Daimyo of Atlantia'. He saw the various Kingdoms as Japanese feifs, each with its warlord. But he was a bit earlier persona that I, I think.
But the BoD is still the Court.
In any case, It'll probably end up being tenno, as a concession to SCA culture, which wants some single word that it can use.
