store1.yimg.com/I/spiers-saddlery_1814_1291603 The top is welded two pieces, 12g a solid 14g skirt under the shikoro The Brim is 14g welded under and over the skiroko is 10oz leather, and yes I know it isnt quite right. It needs another lame, and the lacing isnt quite right, but for a first effort, i think it isnt bad, for being self made. Comments?

It beats the snot out of my first helm - which probably wasn't even legal when I wore it (~1982). Too bad. Because you can get UN pot helms for $5.00. Almost worth making a new one every year (and you would have to, since SCA combat beats them to hades).
I can't tell if the grill is brilliant or weird. On the one hand, I really like the way it follows the line of the helm and visor. On the other, it seems to come out from the helm by quite a bit.
The shikoro makes the overall Japanese impression. It looks like you may have outlined iyozane into the leather? If so, way cool.

Otagiri-dono, The way the grill comes out was somethign I wanted to do. At first glance, it seems....BIG But the idea was to:
1) make sure that no marshall would ever question the safety of it. 2) make a natural looking grill that follows the curve of the brim
The iyozane effect was accidental, but I liked the way it came across, so i left it in. I will end up retooling the next shikoro to really give that effect across each lame.
Thanks for the input!

;D Your Kabuto is beautiful. I hope to produce one as pretty as yours. I understand why you made your face grill so pronounced, but I favor a slimmer face guard. Now that you have some experience creating kabuto, are you going to dabble in mempo?
