Ok, so even if you balloon extra fabric under, it's still called hakama? That makes things a bit clearer. Well, sort of. The long, long ones women wear are called nakabakama. "Naga" means long and "bakama" results from the fact that "h" sounds tend to shift to a "b" or "p" sound when joined with another word. For clarity, we tend to use nagabakama on this forum so everyone knows what we're talking about.

Ok, so even if you balloon extra fabric under, it's still called hakama? That makes things a bit clearer. It's all hakama. The bloused style with long hems that are tied back inside up to the knees are sashinuki, but that doesn't mean that they're not hakama. Sashinuki are a style of kukuri-bakama.
