So I went to a local museum yesterday...and lo and behold, they had a small collection og japanese items on display! This is a big deal for me as there are no places here to see this sort of thing. The items are from a big private collection that was given to the museum in the 1800's and was bought in japan by a Danish soldier who, for some reason, was over there. I snapped a foto of an armour I thought was very cool looking and I'm a bit curious about: Now I should mention that the armour is from the 1800's so it's not period. What I'm curious about is how fra away from period armour it is. To me it sorta looks like a dangae dou as the top part of it is made of kozane (along with the sode and other such bits) but the main body is rivited lames (with huge rivits). I would really like to make something like this at some point but wanna be sure it would fit a sengoku period character. Also, it was interesting to finally see japanese mail up close...holy mammoth those rings are tiny!

I can't tell if those are large figured rivets, but barring any better photo I'd say those are lacquered crosslaces, and it's a hishinui-dô. It's possible they're large rivet heads, though, which would be something you likely wouldn't see (in this form, at any rate) before Edo. If they're crosslaces, it's very much in keeping with a very high end, late 16th-C armour.

Sorry, but couldn't quite see if they were crosslaces...to me they looked like large, flat rivits, which made me wonder as I've thought that for non-filed-down rivits, domed rivits were the way to go. Also, the sign said it's from the 1800 hundreds...that could just mean that the guy bought them then, though.
Also seem to recall something from your site about the rings on the chest being an edo thing. Also, the rings on the sode with the laces in front...shouldnt that be on the back?

"Also, the rings on the sode with the laces in front...shouldnt that be on the back?" Yes they should... Well, guess that's mainly up to the curator who set up the display not knowing how it works or wanting to show that it's there.
