Konichiwa,
What do people think about hair as part of the costuming/recreation experience?
I've been seriously thinking about this, and as a 6'1", 250 lb, blue eyed, blond haired, Caucasian I'm afraid I won't present the "proper" image no matter what I do, but my hair may be something I can fix.
One option, of course, is dye and cuts. My Lady doesn't like the idea of dying my hair however, and after having cut my hair last year, doesn't really want me going back to long hair again. She especially doesn't like the idea of me shaving my head.
Another option is wigs. There is one gentleman in our Barony that wears a "page boy" style wig, and it fits perfectly for his 14th century English persona and looks. Most of the Japanese style wigs I have seen however are all really cheap looking (with an obviously fake looking bald pate) (http://www.shop-japan.co.jp/english-boku/party5-s.htm). There is also the question of the difficulty of making a wig like this work in a camping environment, etc.
I did find one wig that looked reasonable (http://www.shop-japan.co.jp/shop/party-goods/katsura-s02-8011.jpg). It is similar in style to the hair cuts that Mifune Toshiro used in many of his films, but I don't know how period or appropriate that would be for an average member of the buke.
What are your opinions?
Also, does anyone have good resources for researching the types of hair cuts/styles that were used in period? Books? Museums? Portraits?
