Greets.
I was wondering if anyone here knew anything about the construction of kanmuri like those worn by courtiers. How about materials needed?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Ive seen quite a few pictures of kanmuri, and I can probably make a decent replica.... it is after all "creative" anachronism. However, I would apreciate feedback that would help me with accuracy.
Thank You ~M~

I made one out of balsa one time, back in CAID. The thing was made in two parts, and I used poly-eurothane over it to seal it and give it a smooth finish, which I sanded. A few coats of glossy black lacquer and it looked fine. Date

I had to look it up too. It's a hat. And I knew I'd find one on Tony's website. M. Ah, Doomo Arigato Gosaimasu, I appreciate the info. Masahide

The originals are incredibly stiff silk mesh. It seems they're almost molded onto a form and starched within an inch of their lives. Later models were lacquered, as well.

I found a rather stiff black fabric with a widely spaced weave (somewhat translucent) that almost stood up by itself for my eboshi (I did line it with a nylon mesh).
But it is so close to what I imagine eboshi and 'monks robe' and other stiff Heian outfits were made of, that I just got back from Walmart where I purchased the entire rest of the roll (15yds) for $1/yd to take home with me.

I just got back from Walmart where I purchased the entire rest of the roll (15yds) for $1/yd to take home with me. Isn't it amazing what Walmart has on the $1/yd rack? I've purchased 8 bolts of $1 fabric in the past 2 weeks. All of it is wonderfully periodish. Thank you all for your replies. From what I've gathered (here and elsewhere), the piece sticking up and the piece hanging down off the back of the kanmuri are translucient fabric. Does anyone know about the actual head covering? Is it wood? Is it fabric? Again, thank you. ~M~

As I just said ( ) it's very stiff silk gauze, and later models were often lacquered. Tony

I retract my previous statment I found 12 yds of 100% cotton indigo homespun plaid at Wal-Mart in the dollar bin. I should get a good deal of use out of it.
