Konban wa Mina-san,
I have in my collection of kimono 2 Uchikakes given to me years ago. They are not wedding ones, and have been assumed to be "dance" ones.
Both are padded at the hems, with long, furisode sleeves.
One is blazing white silk with white monski woven into the design, with the monski done in silver and white silk thread along the back and upper part of the sleeves-it is lined with silver lame. and weighs about 2 lbs.
The other is a yellow silk with hills done in greens along the bottom. Sakura is done in red and silver silk threads along the top and upper sleeves-it is lined in gold lame, and weighs about 5 lbs! It trails behind me a ways....
I really would like to use them in the SCA-but I don't know if I could-
I always thought the white would be stunning with 3-5 layers of purples and green uchigi with white kosode and white nagajuban. (course it would stun anyone taking a pic, as the silver lining would reflect the flash...)
any suggestions?

They sound absolutely beautiful. Unfortunately, furisode sleeves don't start turning up until well after 1660, when they're only 18" long. By the turn of the 17th century they've achieved more spectacular lengths and look more like the furisode one associates with the word. (Dalby, Kimono: Fashioning Culture, p. 40.)
I am NOT going to advise you to cut these beauties up for parts either. That would be sacrilege.

Well i was thinking maybe tuck the ends of the sleeves up into themselves, then tacking them inside-perhaps opening up the front of the sleeve-so it would'nt be closed.
No- I ain't never gonna cut these up...that's....that's <shudders>

I suspect the bulk of the sleeve ends and lining might be too much for you to get away with turning this into o-sode. Can't hurt to try.
I think the word you want is "abomination." Every once in a great while I rescue a vintage kimono off eBay from the clutches of evil craft quilters. Nothing anywhere near as spectacular as these pieces you've described, but still too nice to slice into their component parts.
Speaking of component parts, I was attacked by some striped silk in shades of purple and gold at the Discount Fabric outlet some weeks ago. It told me it was all right to cut it into 16" squares as long as I promised said squares would be part of a dan gawari kosode. ;->

I want to see pictures please!
I actually just had a conversation with someone who tried to convert the sleeves of a furisode to something more period without cutting away fabric, but there ended up being so much bulk at the bottom of the sleeve it didn't hang very well.
Plus, considering how much wear and tear the beauties would get if they draged on the floor, and the floors at SCA events aren't really the cleanest in the world I've found...

I haven't made it yet, but since you insist, here's a badly lit shot of the striped stuff and the contrasting dupioni - it's actually much more bluish lavender, but it came out very red here. S.

Hopefully after this weekend (Principality Coronet tourney) I may be able to get some pics of said uchikake up via a friend. <pouts cause I don't have a camera>

Yeah. The real color is much prettier. Think lilacs....
