... with a historically extant clan (Takeda, Minamoto etc) am I allowed to use the clan mon on garb, sashimono etc? And if so would it have to be registered? Short, common-sense answer is: You might be able to register a historical Japanese mon for your own use, but only because the SCA College of Heralds is not checking for conflicts against historical Japanese usage. You should be able to use a mon from a historical Japanese clan on your own gear. When people ask, just tell them that your persona is a member of, or in service to, that clan. You should not (in my opinion) claim that a historical mon is your personal mon (and 'personal mon' is probably something of an oxymoron anyway - mons are associated with extended families/clans - not with individuals). Ideally, you should be able to register a modification of that historical mon for your personal use - so that your scrolls will have those arms drawn on them. The above is simply my opinion and is not necessarily representative of SCA policy.

That's what I thought (and hoped) but, as I said....my brain is a wee bit fuzzy at the moment. I blame information overload and the fumes from a certain black barrel that is sacrificing itself for the greater good of my armour
As my name develops I will likely use (as a loyal retainer) the clan mon associated with the eventual name. . . .and take some time to come up with a modification for registering on with the college
thanks
