Due to the wonders of living in a city where the major university is in bed with every function of life, I recently had the opportunity to see a private collection of Edo-period paintings which included a ton of works from all the major schools except for the 'Eccentrics' (of which there are like 3 members)...
After having had this pleasure, I realized that my knowledge of the Rinpa school was sorely lacking - and my efforts to find any sort of interesting book on Rinpa and its' adherents has failed miserably. While it's not really in-period (unless you count its' Heian and Kamakura source inspirations), does anyone know of any good books on Rinpa?
If it helps, major figures of the school include Ogata Korin (which it was named after), Sakai Hoitsu, Kamisaka Sekka, and Honami Koetsu. I'm really the most interested in Koetsu, because apparently he got bored with painting, so he took up other artistic pursuits - like swordmaking. And that's a hell of a jump.
