On impulse, I visited the consultation table at Crown this weekend and bogarted "Name Construction in Medieval Japan" for about 15 minutes with Astrith's blessing. However, I didn't think to take down any notes! I plead two hours sleep. ;-> Now, I remember that "hana" was listed as a documentable root for a female name, and a relatively early one at that. For the life of me, I cannot now remember whether "Hanae" was one of the options. Haname is Right Out because, knowing my friends, it'll end up being pronounced with an exaggerated Southern drawl. Or think I'm into cartoons. If anyone has their copy handy and would be willing to give it a look, I would be most grateful. M.

... I plead two hours sleep... Like a good night sleep is required before an event? Well.... Here are some listings for Hana- names for girls Hana, Hanabi, Hanae, Hanai, Hanaji, Hanaka, Hanako, Hanami, Hanano, Hanao, Hanari, Hanawe, Hanayo. From what I can tell at work, these go back to fairly early, Hanabi, Hanae, Hanako, and Hanayo being the oldest, Hanao being a late period variation of of O-hana. Now here is the kicker, from what I can tell the oldest forms are written in hiragana only, so most of these do not have a kanji equivilent, since most of the the CoH relys on solvieg's book and she concentrates period-ness on the written form of the phonic any of these should pass without too much question since the CoH doesn't care diddly about anything other than bastardized romanji.

Thanks, Takeda-dono. I have the luxury of not having to register this, I've just been pondering the fact that I really should HAVE a name, even if I don't give it out to just anyone. ;->
