I bid and won an antique sensu off eBay. cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7335213709 * It arrived today. Actually having a decently made sensu to examine means I'm going to have to do further experiments. The bones are bamboo and the outer guard bones are double the thickness of the inner bones, so it's much sturdier than the ones I've been making. Inside the guard bones, there's an inlaid strip of metal that the pivot joint goes through. This adds strength and some weight to the bottom of the fan. Most interestingly, though, the guard bones are deliberately curved, probably by steam or heating the bamboo, so that they hold the fan closed. And of course, with a move coming up, I don't have TIME to do this stuff now. M. * moderator edit to shorten url

The kicker is that I'm teaching a class on sensu at our kingdom A&S tourney on Sunday morning - knowing just how far my experiments fall short. If that won't make one humble, nothing will.
At least my class gets to see a real one, side by side with some of my prototypes before hacking on layout bond and basswood.
I will definitely be getting some photos of my class if they let me - and some detail photos of the sensu I bought to add to my web page.
