Noble Cousins! Greetings from Solveig! Here is a set of five possibly interesting books which deal with Japanese Cultural History. They are intended for Japanese Junior High School students, so they should be richly illustrated and have relatively accessible Japanese. Series Title: Knowing the Japanese (people, spirit, clothing, food, dwellings) ISBN: 4265026516 ; Vol 1 Japanese Origins ISBN: 4265026524 ; Vol 2 Japanese Faiths & Beliefs ISBN: 4265026532 ; Vol 3 Japanese Clothing ISBN: 4265026540 ; Vol 4 Japanese Food ISBN: 4265026559 ; Vol 5 Japanese Dwellings I should mention that each volume is oversized (A4) and only has about 47 pages. I should also mention that one of the authors did graduate work at the University of Oregon and Oxford University. You can order them from www.amazon.co.jp/ or another online Japnaese book seller. Baron Edward was of course correct that titles are generally helpful. I created this discussion in the hope that people will share books which will be generally helpful to others.

Noble Cousins! Greetings from Solveig! There is some possiblity that a book containing Zouhyou Monogatari will be republished in February of next year. It is not currently available from Amazon, but I also saw a republication announcement. Aside from Zouhyou Monogatari which Otagiri dono has referenced in the past for food and cookery of ashigari ca 1600, it also contains "Oamu Monogatari" and "Okiku Monogatari" which are supposed to deal with what samurai women were up to at the time. The ISBN of the out of print edition is: 4003024516 The republicaton announcement can be found at: www.iwanami.co.jp/.BOOKS/30/6/3024510.html

Noble Cousins!
Greetings from Solveig! With all of this talk about tanka and makura kotoba, I think I should mention a book that is gathering dust in my library.
Katagiri You'ichi. "Uta Makura Uta Kotoba Jiten" Kadokawa Shoten 1983 ISBN 4-04-063500-0
