Makiwara-sensei, When wearing waraji, do they wear similar to geta in that your heel hangs over the end or are they supposed to be the full size of the foot? Being the monster of a man that I am, I am afraid that even the 30cm waraji wouldnt fit I would love to find some that do, or even a nice geta.. It is so hard... Takeda Shirô Yoshitaka

Takeda-dono, Actually the complete opposite. Your toes will hang over the front of waraji, and your heel will make a pocket, of sorts, in the back. A couple of years ago, I made a pair out of sisal, to see how they were made and how they are supposed to fit, and they were ok, until they got wet. Then I almost had to cut them from my feet. I'm buying a couple of pair, now. I hope this helps. Date Rokurou Yoshimitsu

Thank you for fielding this one, Date-dono. Do I LOOK like a waraji-wearin' bushi to any of you people? Though I do own a pair of waraji-zori that are definitely too big for me.

does anyone know how many cm a size 11 foot would need? Karankoron shows a handy diagram here: www.karankoron.com/waraji.htmlEssentially they should at least cover from just behind your toes to your heel. I've seen them worn with the "heel" wrapping up almost to the ankle. So, it's not really shoe size (not everyone's feet within a range have the same exact measurements), but how long the pad of your foot is.

You're welcome. Karankoron was quite good in explaining how the Japanese wear traditional footwear.

Domo Momochi-dono! I will have to measure from the part between the toes to the back of the heel.. I know my foot is over 30cm for sure.. But with that it MIGHT just work.. foot wear has always been a sad point for me (its hard finding size 15 1/2 EEEE).. So I would be very happy to see if this would work... Next will be trying to figure out some tabi socks ROFLMAO! Takeda-dono, Actually the complete opposite. My fiancee got me this shirt when we first met, when she found out how much I loved all things Japan. It's so true, when it comes to clothing. =)

We shall keep hunting for those or maybe figure out how to make some lol 25cm would be just right for my feet too. I made a pair of period styled tabi. I still have yet to do the finishing sewing, but I got into the kosode so I put that off. They're easy to make, but you have to do a lot of adjusting to get them to look right.
