I am looking to purchase an SCA legal Kabuto. However every craftsman that I have met online either has not returned my e-mails, or has a waiting list over a year long. I am working with a fairly modest budget, but want something at least semi-presentable.
I'm tired of going into battle clad in my Do, Kote, proudly wielding my daisho and wearing an open faced Bascinet. Can anyone offer any advice???

Not exactly the advice you are looking for ... but could you convert the bascinet into a momonari kabuto?

Ultimately I want a Momonari or Zunari Kabuto. I have thought about trying to convert my bascinet, but it looks to have little hope. It's far too awkward. and I am far too untrained in the way of Smithing to make such alterations.
The dream is to have a Nice powder coated momonari Kabuto with custom Menpo.

Converting your bascinet shouldn't be too hard, so long as you have a drill and some plastic or leather. Two holes at the mounting points (horizontally across both sides behind the temples and the back of the head) will allow you to attach shikoro. Shikoro should be very easy to make, being long strips of material. Go a step further and make the top lame or two extra long to allow for old-style fukigaeshi. Go even further, and drill a hole at the 'center forehead', then cut a mabizashi (brim) to attach at the center above your bargrill and those temple holes, underneath the top lame of the shikoro. You might use a pattern something like a simple gorget and modify it for mabizashi. Then, if the peak of the bascinet is still bothersome to you (which it probably will be), top it off with a cheap straight-hair wig. You know... a little something like Takeda Shingen used to crown his kabuto. A simple maedate (horn-crest-thing) attached on top of the mabizashi painted gold could peek out from underneath the hair and look pretty good.
Can ya tell I've been thinking about this stuff?

Now, all that was meant as a temporary solution while you save up for your kabuto, of course. Are you willing to try it?

not to intentionally hijack the thread, but Toastygawa, why would you use plastic or leather for the lames and not steel?

For this purpose (very simple curves), I'd think plastic would be easiest to work (just, cut it, drill it, heat it up and lay it on the helmet). The mabizashi is a bit more complex of a shape, but can still be done in plastic.
Steel would be perfectly fine to use, but for a modification meant to be a temporary solution, I'd be inclined to use plastic. Of course, doing the same with steel would be good exercise for pounding out one's own helmet.

I would certainly like to see some of your work Kurodachi.
In the meantime, I've gotten the inspiration and motivation to try to augment the bascinet for temporary use. The worst that could happen would be a bad rendition of a Kabuto, as opposed to no Kabuto at all.
Thank you all for your suggestions. One last question, would making the shikoro out of aluminum be a bad idea, or should I just stick to steel, leather, or plastic?
