I just went down to Ogami-Sensei's shop to put finishing touches on a momonari bachi kabuto I have been working on and I took a peek at the kabuto he is offering on E-bay. Nice job, Sir! I like the details, and really like the maedate. It is vaguely reminiscent of the one worn by my late period namesake, Masamune. Classy! Date

I had a sharp-as-nails 1st Sgt back on Okinawa who was only 35 - he must have come out of the womb an E-4! He had so much command authority that he could probably order the metal to form into shape with only a sharp bark or two...no tools required! Ah the good 'ole days! Date

Did you ever see the DVD for "We Were Soldiers Once"? There's a GREAT deleted scene about a first sgt. named Muldoon. Effingham

If you make a form out of styrofoam for the bowl, you should have no trouble figuring out the shape of the pieces. Everything after that is a piece of cake. Oh. Styrofoam. Didn't think of that. Great idea! Thank you! I can make a copy of each styrofoam piece and use that as a pattern to make a hardwood kata as well. Cool!

Oh. Styrofoam. Didn't think of that. I can make a copy of each styrofoam piece and use that as a pattern to make a hardwood kata as well. Cool! There's a nifty little technique I use that you might like: Decide how much padding you want to use. 1", for example. Cut out twelve or eighteen 1" X 1" X 1" blocks. Space them out along a strip of duct tape. Put the strip around your head where you want the bottom of the bowl to be and overlap the tape. Take a second strip and put it over the top of your head, running front to back. Now measure the diameter and crown lengths of your 'padded' head. These measurements will give you a perfect size for your head. You can then carve a styrofoam block out (using an electric carving knife or a Sure-form tool) to give you the finished shape. If you want to make a different shape, just rubber-cement more styrofoam onto the basic head form and carve it out. Once the styrofoam is the right shape, take a Sharpie marker and draw out your plates. Add a 1/2" overlap to one side, and you can trace out your pattern pieces. Ooo. I'm getting instructional here. Sorry. Would anyone be interested in a 'how-to' article on making a kabuto? I'd be more than happy to put one together if people would like. (As I mentioned before, I'm a compulsive teacher.)

Yes, please put something together. I have yet to find a step by step on making a helm. I have found some wonderful patterns for some of the pieces, but am hesitant to try to put them together.
Thank You.

I'd like to know that myself...would you take a custom commission? Hajime My goodness! I had no idea that there was such a pressing need for kabuto! First things first. I'm already sketching out the format for the "how to" article. One of my squires needs a hat, so I'm going to document the process of teaching him how to do it. Then I'll write up a step-by-step set of instructions and have them posted on the Yama Kaminari web site. Secondly, if anyone wants me to build them a kabuto, I'll be more than happy to. But there are a few serious caveats: 1. I am not a professional armorer. I don't have a professional armorer's shop. 2. I'm up to my eyebrows in projects already. I'm committed this spring/summer to build two yurts, another buke yashiki (samurai house, like Saiaiko's), two other kabuto, and to re-head two taiko drums. I'm also the #1/ drop dead deputy for security at Pennsic this year (not actually in charge again, thank God!), and that's taking a chunk of my time as well. Also, my wife (as well as my nine squires) like to see my face every now and then. I can make some kabuto for people who want them, but I can't promise a specific delivery date other than "as fast as I possibly can, and hopefully before Pennsic, but maybe by Christmas." Keeping the above in mind, if you want me to build you a hat, drop me a note. (OgamiBusho(AT)yahoo.com) We can talk design and price. (And as a complete aside, would anyone be interested in a kabuto that has a bowl covered in actual gold leaf? I've never seen one in the SCA before, and I think it would be kind of neat looking and a fun project to do...)

Ogami-sama:
Since we seem to no longer be needing a custom job I thought I'd mention....
The helm you made is beautiful. It arrived Wednsday.. I made the eboshi for Cuan to wear underneath that day to go with it. He's had the helm on every chance he gets...We're going to Wal Mart tonight to get padding for it....He's dying to get it combat ready even though practice isn't until next weekend.
Now I'm off to make some clothing for myself...have a demo on May 7th...
